THE CENTRE

Background

DiagramThere are a number of different factors that input into controlling balance. There are inputs from the eyes, the joints and the balance (vestibular) organs in each ear. The information from each of these inputs is integrated in the brain. Problems or damage to any of these inputs can result in a difficulty with balance. When one input is affected there will be a degree of compensation by the other inputs.

Symptoms of a balance problem may include but are not limited to dizziness, vertigo, a feeling of being off balance, nausea and vomiting.

The purpose of The Wellington Balance Centre is to diagnose the nature of the balance disorder and provide appropriate rehabilitation. Diagnosis is made through a detailed consultation with the ENT Consultant. He may well refer you for further balance tests.

Some balance disorders can be cured there and then in the clinic. Others may require longer term treatment with drugs and medicines and others may need a customised rehabilitation programme. This is a series of exercises specifically targeted for each individual with the aim of helping the brain to compensate for any persisting problems with one or more of the inputs to the balance system.
